Legend has it that the first pattern of the inaul was created in a weaving competition among Sultan Umping’s four wives in the late 1800s. The winning pattern, named “karanda,” has since evolved into other intricate patterns like Sikukaruwang, Lombayan, Biyaludan, and more. This story is believed to have initiated the tradition of weaving in Maguindanao.
